HLL Lifecare launches Happy Days Earth, India's first BIS-certified compostable sanitary napkin
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
HLL Lifecare Ltd, the Central government's Mini Ratna PSU under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, has entered the eco-friendly menstrual hygiene segment with the launch of Happy Days Earth — a 100 per cent compostable sanitary napkin — from its base in Thiruvananthapuram. The product is among the first sanitary napkins in India to simultaneously satisfy Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) quality specifications and compostability requirements under IS/ISO 17088.
What Makes Happy Days Earth Different
Unlike conventional sanitary napkins — which rely on polyethylene, polypropylene, and Super Absorbent Polymers (SAP) and can persist in landfills for centuries — Happy Days Earth is built entirely from plant-derived and cellulose-based materials. The product features a cellulose-based biodegradable absorbent core, a plant-derived fibre top sheet, and compostable leak-proof layers and packaging.
Critically, it achieves high absorbency without any SAP. Testing under BIS IS 5405:2025 recorded an absorbency of 35 ml, exceeding the prescribed minimum of 30 ml. Independent studies demonstrated over 91 per cent biodegradation within 156 days, with physical disintegration standards also met during composting. The product decomposes into water, carbon dioxide, biomass, and organic matter, leaving behind no harmful residues or microplastics.
The Plastic Pollution Context
The launch comes as manufacturers across sectors face mounting pressure to reduce plastic waste. Conventional menstrual hygiene products are a significant contributor to plastic pollution — their synthetic components can remain in landfills for hundreds of years, and their breakdown into microplastics poses risks to soil and water systems. India's menstrual hygiene market, which has expanded rapidly since the rollout of government subsidy schemes, has largely remained dependent on plastic-intensive products.
Notably, this is one of the first times a Central government PSU has staked out a position in the sustainable hygiene space, lending institutional weight to what has so far been a niche, startup-driven segment.
HLL's Broader Women's Healthcare Portfolio
HLL Lifecare already markets a range of women's healthcare products including contraceptive pills, intrauterine devices, emergency contraceptives, menstrual cups, and conventional sanitary napkins. Officials said the Happy Days Earth launch reflects the PSU's strategy of aligning public health goals with environmental sustainability — a dual mandate that sets it apart from purely commercial players in the segment.
What This Means for the Market
The entry of a government-backed entity into compostable menstrual hygiene is expected to accelerate mainstream acceptance of eco-friendly alternatives, which have historically struggled with price premiums and limited distribution. HLL's established supply chain and institutional reach — including public health delivery networks — could give Happy Days Earth a distribution advantage that private-sector entrants lack. Industry observers will watch whether the product is integrated into government women's health programmes, which could dramatically expand its reach beyond urban consumers.
