Hyderabad, Sep 21 (NationPress) The Hyderabad police have officially changed the abbreviation for Telangana state from ‘TS’ to ‘TG’ on their vehicle number plates. This decision comes following the state government's directive to update the abbreviation, prompting Hyderabad Police Commissioner C.V. Anand to order the removal of old number plates from patrol and police station vehicles, ensuring they are replaced with new ones along with necessary maintenance.

In line with this initiative, officials from the City Armed Reserve (CAR) Headquarters have coordinated efforts to execute these changes across a fleet of 188 government vehicles.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police at CAR Headquarters disclosed that approximately Rs 1.6 crore has been allocated for this project. The comprehensive works included the removal of outdated plates, along with machine polishing, denting, painting of bumpers, doors, and panels, engine repairs, and various internal hardware upgrades to keep the vehicles in optimal condition.

The restoration and application of new stickers on 134 patrol vehicles were finalized, with these vehicles being officially re-commissioned by CAR Headquarters officials on Sunday.

These updated vehicles are expected to significantly contribute to maintaining law and order in the city, deterring crime, ensuring rapid responses during emergencies, and bolstering the overall effectiveness of the police force, as noted by officials.

Additionally, other vehicles within the Hyderabad City Police fleet—including Traffic ACP vehicles, Inspector vehicles, Pilot vehicles, and Interceptor vehicles—are scheduled to undergo similar updates in the near future to ensure they are fully operational.

On this occasion, clear instructions were given to vehicle drivers regarding the importance of maintaining the cleanliness and functionality of the vehicles.

In May of the previous year, the Telangana government had mandated the transition from 'TS' to 'TG' as the official state abbreviation.

With the central government adopting 'TG' as the new abbreviation, the state government instructed the replacement of all instances of 'TS' with 'TG' across state PSUs, agencies, autonomous bodies, and other governmental entities.

A Government Order (GO) was issued requiring all Secretariat departments to update all formal documents—including letterheads, reports, notifications, signage within and outside government offices, and any digital platforms—to reflect this change.

The Ministry of Road and Transport and Highways has also recognized 'TG' as the vehicle code for Telangana, officially replacing 'TS' for all vehicle registration plates.

The decision to update the abbreviation was made in February 2024 by the Congress government.

Initially, after Telangana’s formation in 2014, the TRS government had chosen 'TS' as the state abbreviation. However, the Congress party, which assumed power in December 2023, opted for a change.

Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy remarked that the previous administration failed to adhere to regulations in their selection of 'TS', choosing it based on arbitrary preferences.
