Hyderabad Welcomes 44 Transgender Traffic Assistants

Hyderabad, Dec 4 (NationPress) The Hyderabad Police has successfully enlisted 44 transgender individuals as traffic assistants after conducting a series of physical events for their selection on Wednesday.

A total of 58 transgender participants took part in various physical activities such as running, long jump, and shot put at the Goshamahal Police Ground.

As per police reports, among the 44 selected transgenders, 29 are female transgenders, while the remaining 15 are male.

The recruitment event was attended by Hyderabad Police Commissioner C. V. Anand, who encouraged the selected individuals to serve as role models for their community and to enhance the reputation of the Hyderabad Police and the Telangana State Police Department.

This initiative marks the first recruitment drive following an instruction from Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy to appoint transgenders as traffic assistants within the Hyderabad Traffic Police Department.

In alignment with the Chief Minister’s directives, Anitha Ramachandran, Commissioner of the Women and Child Welfare Department, Ravi Gupta, Principal Secretary of the Home Department, and C. V. Anand, Commissioner of Police Hyderabad, held crucial meetings with transgender candidates regarding the recruitment process.

Following the government’s instructions, events were organized based on the list of candidates provided by the Social Welfare Department at Goshamahal Police Ground.

This recruitment event was facilitated by a committee comprising the DCP South West, Home Guard Commandant, and Additional DCP CAR, along with officials from the Welfare Department.

The organized events included various physical activities for the transgender participants.

According to the eligibility criteria, candidates should be between 18 and 40 years old, must be Indian citizens, should have completed at least SSC, possess a personal identity card issued by the respective District Magistrate, and be local residents within the Hyderabad Commissionerate.

Last month, the Chief Minister announced the recruitment of transgenders as volunteers for traffic management and ‘drunk and drive’ checks in Hyderabad.

In the initial phase, they will be assigned to manage traffic in high-traffic areas across Greater Hyderabad.

The Chief Minister proposed utilizing their services similarly to Home Guards. They will be stationed at traffic signals to prevent signal violations and other infractions.

Additionally, the Chief Minister suggested employing transgenders in drunk and drive checks.

He instructed officials to finalize a special dress code for the transgenders and to set their salaries to match those of the Home Guards.

Furthermore, the Chief Minister recommended providing a training program for traffic management lasting between one week to ten days.

Officials believe that appointing transgenders as traffic volunteers will not only offer them a source of income but also help to earn them respect within society.
