IANS Interview: The Controversy of 'Shahi Snan' and Mahant Shankaranand Saraswati's Advocacy for 'Amrit Snan'

Mahakumbh Nagar, Dec 31 (NationPress) In a recent dialogue with IANS, Mahant Shankaranand Saraswati, the head of Anand Akhada, expressed his insights on a range of matters, including the controversy surrounding the 'Shahi Snan', Sanatan Dharma, Kumbh Mela, and more.

On the heated discussions regarding the term 'Shahi Snan', Mahant Shankaranand remarked, 'If there is any objection to the term 'Shahi Snan' for Mahakumbh, I believe that when kings and emperors used it with respect, it was appropriate. However, if people have issues with the term, 'Amrit Snan' is also fine. There is no harm in using any word that is connected to our culture.'

Aligning with Mohan Bhagwat's sentiments, he conveyed his high regard for Bhagwat but added that 'any decision should be made only after understanding the full context and details of his statement.' He advised against any political bias in discussions surrounding this topic.

When asked if Sanatan Dharma faces any threats, Mahant Shankaranand confidently stated, 'Sanatan Dharma can never be in danger. Whenever any crisis arises, an avatar appears to protect it.' He also addressed the presence of Muslim shopkeepers and government officials at the Kumbh Mela, clarifying that he has no issues with Muslims but emphasized the necessity for some restrictions to uphold the event's sanctity. 'We must maintain purity; if someone's actions do not align with our religious beliefs, we try to protect our sanctity.'

Discussing the purpose of the Dharma Sansad at Kumbh, he explained, 'The event is meant to discuss the concept of a Hindu Nation, which is a matter of importance for everyone. It is a religious gathering, and it should not be politicised. Our demand is to protect our religion, culture, and faith.'

He underscored the sacredness of the Ganga's water, referring to it as naturally pure and suitable for bathing while emphasizing the need for effective measures to safeguard the river.

On the intersection of politics and religion, Mahant Shankaranand insisted that politics should remain distinct from religious events like the Kumbh Mela, welcoming all leaders to such gatherings.

Regarding Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's proposal to provide 18,000 rupees to priests and pundits, he dismissed it as mere political rhetoric, stating, 'Such alluring promises in politics should not be trusted.'

In response to Akhilesh Yadav's financial aid of 5 lakh rupees to the families affected by the Sambhal violence, Mahant Shankaranand characterized it as politically motivated, asserting, 'Such actions promote vote bank politics rather than secularism.'

Concerning the resolution for a Hindu Nation at Kumbh, he noted, 'This is in the hands of the government. It is only a demand, and the government can pass it whenever they choose.'
