New Delhi, Dec 31 (NationPress): The largest city gas supplier in the nation, Indraprastha Gas Ltd, announced on Wednesday that it is reducing the cost of piped cooking gas for households by Rs 0.70 per standard cubic metre (scm) in Delhi and the surrounding NCR region.

This price adjustment will take effect from January 1, as stated by the company in a post on X.

"IGL has declared a significant price drop in its domestic piped natural gas (PNG) rates this New Year for consumers in Delhi and NCR by Rs 0.70 per standard cubic metre (scm)," said the company.

Post-adjustment, the new rates will be Rs 47.89 per scm in Delhi, Rs 46.70 per scm in Gurugram, and Rs 47.76 per scm in Noida, Greater Noida, and Ghaziabad.

This price reduction follows the recent restructuring of pipeline tariffs by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB), which has lowered the cost associated with transporting natural gas.

The piped gas is essential for cooking in households and serves as fuel for electricity generation, as well as a feedstock for producing fertilizers and CNG, which is utilized as an eco-friendly fuel for vehicles like taxis and buses in urban areas.

"IGL reaffirms its dedication to making clean energy both accessible and affordable as we approach 2026," the statement from IGL noted.

On December 16, the PNGRB unveiled a restructured tariff framework for pipelines that transport natural gas.

The new tariffs will be implemented from January 1, simplifying, standardizing, and reducing costs for consumers and city gas distribution firms.

As per the revamped tariff structure, which will come into play from January 1, 2026, the number of distance-based tariff zones will be cut from three to two - up to 300 km and beyond - with a single, lower Zone-1 rate (approximately Rs 54 per million British thermal units) now applicable nationwide for CNG and domestic PNG users, irrespective of their distance from the gas source, as mentioned in a PNGRB statement.

Point of View

I can affirm that this price reduction by Indraprastha Gas Ltd is a positive step towards making clean energy more accessible for the masses. It reflects the company's commitment to consumer welfare amidst changing regulatory frameworks.
