Patna, June 21 (NationPress) In a significant achievement, the Rohtas Police in Bihar on Saturday dismantled an illegal cigarette manufacturing facility located in Balathuan village, within the jurisdiction of the Sasaram Mufassil police station.
Following a credible tip-off, law enforcement uncovered a large-scale operation that was producing counterfeit cigarettes of well-known brands, including Gold Flake, using advanced machinery and raw materials.
Superintendent of Police Roshan Kumar confirmed the operation, stating that a specialized team led by SDPO Kumar Vaibhav was formed to act on the intelligence received.
This team included personnel from various local police stations.
During the raid, two suspects were apprehended at the scene, namely Gopalji Ojha, identified as the factory owner, and Rajesh Kumar Mishra, the supervisor, both hailing from Baragaon, Varanasi (UP).
Both suspects are residents of Uttar Pradesh and are believed to have been operating this illegal venture for approximately seven years.
The police also detained and interrogated over 20 workers present on the premises. Most were reportedly unaware of the scale and illegality of the operations they were involved in.
Authorities seized three sophisticated cigarette-making machines, substantial quantities of finished counterfeit cigarettes (including Gold Flake and other brands), packaging materials that imitated genuine brands, and large stockpiles of raw materials such as filters, tobacco, and wrappers.
A raid on a nearby warehouse uncovered additional fake stock, which points to a well-organized distribution network.
The total estimated worth of the confiscated items amounts to crores of rupees.
SP Roshan Kumar indicated that the police are now investigating the supply chain, distribution network, and potential connections to larger interstate counterfeit operations.
Initial findings suggest that these products were being distributed across Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and possibly neighboring states.
“This operation had been clandestinely running for years, resulting in significant revenue loss to the government and legitimate brand owners. We are taking this case with utmost seriousness, and a comprehensive investigation is ongoing,” said SP Roshan Kumar.
The arrested individuals will be presented in court, and further charges may be filed under relevant sections pertaining to fraud, counterfeiting, and organized crime.
Forensic teams are set to analyze the machinery and product samples.
