New Delhi, June 29 (NationPress) In a significant achievement under the ‘Mission 2027: Drug-Free Delhi’ initiative, the Operations Cell from the South West District Police has dismantled a major illicit cigarette network and apprehended two principal suppliers in the Nangal Dewat locality of Vasant Kunj.
Authorities seized 94,000 packets of illegal, foreign-imported cigarettes—devoid of mandatory warnings and MRP as required by the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA)—from a basement warehouse.
The individuals taken into custody have been recognized as Parikshit (22), a Vasant Kunj local and the owner of the warehouse, and P.P. Chengappa (40) from Karnataka. Both were implicated in the smuggling and distribution of cigarettes sourced from nations such as Greece and Dubai.
The illegal products were being distributed throughout Delhi-NCR and South India via a sophisticated supply chain.
The confiscated items include: 13,000 packets of L&B Original Silver, 5,000 packets of King Size Mayfair, 50,000 packets of Richmond King Size Real Blue, and 26,000 packets of Richmond King Size.
An FIR has been filed under No. 276/25 at Vasant Kunj South Police Station, citing Sections 7, 14, and 20(2) of the COTPA Act.
According to law enforcement, Parikshit obtained knowledge of trade operations from his father, who operates an import-export business at the airport. He subsequently collaborated with a Bengaluru-based agent, Sunil, who introduced him to Chengappa.
Chengappa served as the intermediary between the cargo supplier and distributors in Delhi.
The operation was executed by a team led by Inspector Gajender Singh under the oversight of ACP Vijay Kumar.
This action forms part of a targeted initiative aimed at curtailing the distribution of illegal tobacco products within the national capital.
Ongoing investigations are focused on uncovering the larger network involved in this illicit trade, as stated by Amit Goel, DCP, South West District, New Delhi.
