New Delhi, Jan 23 (NationPress) A tableau from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) is set to make its inaugural appearance at this year’s Republic Day parade, commemorating 150 years of dedicated service since the department's founding in 1875.

The IMD, operating under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, will present its notable achievements in weather forecasting and its crucial role in disaster management and the well-being of society.

“Through Mission Mausam, initiated by PM Modi, we aim to empower the populace by enhancing awareness and significantly reducing the fatalities and impacts caused by adverse climatic events,” stated Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, Director General of the IMD.

He added that the concept for the tableau was developed last year. The display will underscore IMD’s progress in enhancing weather prediction capabilities and the transformative changes it has undergone over the years.

Mohapatra highlighted IMD’s global recognition in weather forecasting and its effectiveness in minimizing casualties due to natural calamities.

The rear segment of the tableau focuses on the ministry's influence on four vital communities: Fisherwomen, who steer clear of treacherous waters due to timely alerts; pilots, who depend on updated weather data for safe aviation; mothers, who shield their children from extreme weather in rural areas; and scientists, who investigate climate change to better protect the planet.
