Increased Police Presence in Darbhanga After Violence During Vivah Panchami Parade

Patna, Dec 7 (NationPress) Tension lingered in Bajitpur village of Darbhanga district in Bihar after an outbreak of violence involving stone pelting during the Vivah Panchami parade on Saturday. The police have been deployed in considerable numbers to ensure that no further disturbances occur.
The unrest began when the procession approached a mosque in the Bajitpur area on Friday night.
As per police reports, unknown assailants hurled stones and bricks at the tableau, sparking a confrontation between two groups. Several individuals were injured in the melee and were taken to a local medical facility. Authorities managed to restore order following police intervention.
This incident interrupted a long-standing, peaceful tradition of tableaux during Vivah Panchami, which commemorates the marriage of Lord Rama and Sita.
Organizer Nago Das expressed disbelief at the violence, remarking that such events had not occurred in the past. “We have been hosting religious celebrations for many years. When the tableau of Panchami Vivah neared the mosque, stones were thrown from the opposite side. Many women and children were participants in the procession. They were taken to a nearby temple for safety, and we have alerted local authorities,” Das stated.
Participants in the tableau noted that there had been no previous incidents of opposition to Hindu processions in the vicinity.
It is claimed that members of another community had stockpiled bricks and stones, intentionally disrupting the procession as it passed through the area on Friday. The situation escalated rapidly, resulting in injuries and significant disorder.
In the aftermath, police personnel present assisted the victims, and additional forces were dispatched to the location. The police worked to mediate between both parties and restore calm.
Officials from the district administration are now stationed in the area to prevent any further escalation.
The police are also conducting an active investigation into the incident, including reviewing CCTV footage to identify and prosecute those responsible.
