Burhanpur, Sep 8 (NationPress) Tensions among communities escalated in the Burhanpur district of Madhya Pradesh late Sunday night after a procession for the immersion of Ganesh idols was allegedly attacked with stones, resulting in injuries to three individuals.
Authorities reported that a strong police presence was deployed to restore order and conduct a flag march in the affected area.
The incident left three individuals wounded, who were promptly transported to the local district hospital for medical attention.
This altercation took place in Pratima village, situated approximately 20 km from the district's main hub, around 10 p.m. During the procession towards a nearby river for the immersion of Lord Ganesha idols, an unidentified group began throwing stones as the procession passed through Pathani Mohalla, igniting a standoff between the two communities.
Senior officials, including Additional Collector Veer Singh Chouhan and Additional Superintendent of Police Antar Singh Kanesh, quickly arrived at the scene to manage the situation.
A police spokesperson confirmed that calm has been restored, although a substantial security detail remains in place.
The location of the incident has been designated a prohibited zone, and a flag march was conducted late that night to avert further issues.
“While the situation is currently stable, a strong police presence is maintained. Investigators are reviewing CCTV footage to identify the perpetrators,” stated a senior police official to reporters on Monday.
Burhanpur MLA Archana Chitnis visited the site, engaged with residents, and urged them to refrain from violence.
She remained in the area until early Monday morning to monitor the situation. The senior BJP figure emphasized that certain anti-social elements aimed to disrupt peace and incite communal strife.
“In Burhanpur, we typically celebrate all festivals harmoniously, and there are no disputes regarding each other's celebrations. Sadly, a regrettable event unfolded during the immersion of Lord Ganesha’s idol, as stone pelting escalated tensions in the village,” Chitnis remarked to IANS on Monday.
She also noted that a similar occurrence transpired last year.
“Last year, stones were thrown during the Ganesh idol immersion, and I called for the punishment of those responsible. That did not occur. The government must take decisive action to prevent repeat incidents,” she added.
