New Delhi, March 21 (NationPress) With India’s coal production surpassing 1 billion tonnes, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday celebrated this achievement as a source of national pride and a historic landmark for the country.

This accomplishment reinforces the vision of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ and is anticipated to bolster India’s energy sector while diminishing reliance on imports.

“A proud moment for India! Achieving the significant landmark of 1 billion tonnes in coal production is a remarkable milestone, showcasing our dedication to energy security, economic development, and self-sufficiency,” the Prime Minister shared on the social media platform X.

Union Minister for Coal and Mines, G Kishan Reddy, previously announced on X that India has reached this significant 1 billion tonnes coal production milestone.

“India has achieved the incredible benchmark of 1 BILLION TONNES of coal production! Through advanced technologies and efficient practices, we have not only augmented production but have also ensured sustainable and responsible mining,” stated the minister.

Reddy further remarked that this accomplishment will accommodate our growing power needs, stimulate economic growth, and secure a prosperous future for every Indian under the visionary guidance of PM Modi.

In response to the Union Minister's post, PM Modi emphasized that “this achievement also mirrors the commitment and efforts of everyone connected to the sector.”

Earlier this week, the Central government set a goal to supply 906.1 million tonnes (MT) of coal to the power sector for the financial year 2025-26. The Ministry of Coal presented this plan to Parliament following a request from the Ministry of Power regarding coal necessities for the upcoming fiscal year.

At present, the nation has a sufficient coal supply. According to the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), coal-based power facilities had a stockpile of 53.49 MT as of March 10, 2025.

This represents a 20.2 percent increase compared to the 44.51 MT stock recorded on the same date last year.
