New Delhi, Nov 3 (NationPress) India and the European Union (EU) are poised to engage in negotiations this week focusing on fundamental issues such as trade in goods, trade in services, and rules of origin, along with various technical and institutional aspects, as highlighted in an official statement released on Monday.
A prominent team of EU negotiators has arrived in New Delhi for the period from November 3-7 to hold discussions with Indian officials regarding the anticipated India–EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA).
The negotiations received a boost following a virtual meeting between Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and European Trade and Economic Security Commissioner Maros Sefcovic, as well as Agriculture and Food Commissioner Christophe Hansen.
During this visit, Sabine Weyand, Director-General for Trade at the European Commission, will be in New Delhi on November 5-6 for high-level discussions with Commerce Secretary Rajesh Aggarwal addressing significant technical and policy matters.
The interactions are designed to resolve critical pending issues and push the agreement towards a fair and balanced framework that serves the interests of both parties, according to a statement from the Commerce Ministry.
The dialogue is guided by a mutual vision of a contemporary, robust, and future-oriented FTA that considers the priorities and concerns of both India and the EU.
The statement further noted that this visit follows Minister Goyal’s official trip to Brussels on October 27-28, where he engaged in forward-thinking discussions with Sefcovic.
"These consultations reaffirm the commitment of both sides to enhance engagement and facilitate a comprehensive trade agreement," the statement conveyed.
The arrival of the EU delegation signifies the collective resolve of India and the European Union to finalize a just and equitable agreement that promotes trade, investment, innovation, and sustainable growth.
Last week, Goyal mentioned that India is at an advanced stage in discussions with both the European Union and the US regarding trade deals. He expressed that India is now negotiating with developed nations and is eager to contribute to their future, "as we hope they will contribute to our future for a Viksit Bharat."
