MoS Pabitra Margherita: India Vigilantly Observing Middle East Conflict for Citizens' Safety
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Guwahati, March 1 (NationPress) The Minister of State (MoS) for External Affairs, Pabitra Margherita, expressed his deep concern on Sunday regarding the safety of Indian nationals abroad amid a significant military escalation in the Middle East. This escalation includes coordinated military actions by the US and Israel against Iran's leadership, resulting in the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
While addressing the media in Assam's Majuli, MoS Margherita stated that the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and other relevant agencies are diligently observing the situation to safeguard Indians who are either traveling or residing overseas.
"Given the severe circumstances developing in the Middle East, particularly following the crucial attacks on Iran, the MEA is maintaining a vigilant watch on the entire scenario," he remarked.
He further noted, "Guidelines have been established for the protection and support of students, tourists, and all Indians currently outside the country."
The recent military operation, termed "Operation Epic Fury", is part of a collaborative effort by the US and Israel targeting Iranian nuclear and military sites. It escalated significantly when Iranian state media confirmed the death of Khamenei, who had been at the helm of the Islamic Republic for over three decades.
A national mourning period lasting 40 days has been declared in Iran.
Reports suggest the strikes specifically targeted locations in Tehran, Natanz, and other strategic sites, causing substantial destruction and contributing to a precarious security environment in the region.
MoS Margherita advised Indian citizens, especially students and travelers in impacted areas, to maintain communication with Indian diplomatic missions and adhere to safety guidelines.
"The safety and welfare of Indians abroad remain our top priority," he emphasized, adding that legitimate cases of distress will be addressed with maximum support through government channels.
His statements come as various nations reassess travel advisories and consular operations in light of escalating concerns about the potential global security and energy market consequences stemming from the conflict in the Middle East.
Experts believe that the heightened tensions may lead to prolonged regional instability, affecting global diplomatic relations and civilian safety well beyond the immediate conflict zones.
MoS Margherita also called for calm among communities in Assam with familial connections in the Middle East, stressing that the situation is fluid and that all official channels are operational to provide timely assistance.
"In these uncertain times, accurate information and coordinated support are vital," he concluded.
