New Delhi, March 23 (NationPress) India is providing extensive support to Amit Gupta, an Indian national hailing from Vadodara in Gujarat, who has been unjustly detained in Qatar over allegations of data theft, which is currently under investigation, according to sources familiar with the situation.

Gupta, a senior employee of the IT company Tech Mahindra, was taken into custody by Qatari authorities on January 1, as reported by his mother, Pushpa Gupta, to the media in Vadodara.

His father indicated that Gupta was apprehended by Qatar's state security forces.

The Indian embassy in Qatar has been made aware of Gupta's detention in connection with an ongoing investigation, the sources stated on condition of anonymity.

Gupta’s family maintains that he is innocent and has been wrongfully accused of data theft. They are calling for his immediate release and have appealed to the Prime Minister’s Office for intervention.

"Our embassy is actively providing all necessary assistance in this matter and is monitoring the situation closely," one source mentioned, though they refrained from disclosing specifics about the case or the charges against Gupta.

The embassy has been in regular contact with Gupta's family, his legal representative, and Qatari authorities, the sources added.

Pushpa Gupta shared that she had traveled to Qatar and met with the Indian ambassador there.

She reported that the ambassador indicated there had been no "positive response" regarding Gupta's situation thus far.

BJP MP Hemang Joshi informed the media that Gupta, a Vadodara resident, had been employed by Tech Mahindra in Qatar for over a decade.

He was detained by Qatari security officials and taken into custody, Joshi stated.

"His parents traveled to Qatar for a month and attempted to meet him, but were unsuccessful," the BJP MP noted.

This marks the second case since 2022 involving the detention of an Indian national in Qatar.

In 2022, eight former Indian Navy personnel, including highly decorated officers, were detained and later sentenced to death in 2023. Their sentences were later commuted by a Qatari court, and they were released on the orders of the Qatari Emir in February 2024.
