New Delhi, Nov 5 (NationPress) The Indian Navy is set to bolster its hydrographic survey capabilities with the commissioning of Ikshak, the third vessel of the Survey Vessel (Large) [SVL] class and the inaugural ship to be stationed at the Southern Naval Command, as announced by the Ministry of Defence on Wednesday.
As per a statement from the MoD, the vessel will be officially inducted into service in a ceremony graced by Indian Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi at the Naval Base, Kochi, on November 6, 2025.
Constructed by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd in Kolkata, Ikshak represents a significant leap towards India’s self-sufficiency in shipbuilding.
“The ship boasts over 80 per cent indigenous content, showcasing the triumph of the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative and the collaborative efforts between GRSE and Indian Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs),” the MoD noted.
The name ‘Ikshak’, which translates to ‘Guide’ in Sanskrit, perfectly encapsulates the vessel’s mission as a beacon of precision and intent.
This vessel is meticulously crafted to conduct comprehensive coastal and deep-water hydrographic surveys of ports, harbours, and navigation routes. The information gathered will be crucial for promoting safe marine navigation, thereby enhancing India’s maritime safety framework.
Fitted with cutting-edge hydrographic and oceanographic tools, including a high-resolution multi-beam echo sounder, Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV), Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV), and four Survey Motor Boats (SMBs), Ikshak adds unparalleled flexibility and capability to the Navy’s hydrographic fleet.
Additionally, the ship is equipped with a helicopter deck, expanding its operational range and facilitating multi-domain missions.
The commissioning of Ikshak signifies a pivotal achievement in the Indian Navy’s relentless pursuit of enhancing its survey and charting infrastructure.
As a testament to indigenous strength, technological prowess, and maritime stewardship, Ikshak is prepared to serve the nation—exploring the unknown and safeguarding India’s extensive maritime boundaries.
