Washington, Feb 2 (NationPress) The latest union budget demonstrates that New Delhi is keenly pursuing global investments, talent, and strategic independence, with non-resident Indians taking a pivotal role in this strategy, according to a US policy analyst.

Khanderao Kand, Chief of Policy and Strategy at the Foundation for India and Indian Diaspora Studies, shared with IANS that the budget embodies strategic confidence amidst global economic and geopolitical fluctuations.

In response to inquiries, Kand noted that the budget significantly facilitates NRI engagement in Indian equities by increasing both individual and overall investment limits. He remarked that this adjustment simplifies and enhances direct market access.

Long-standing issues regarding NRI property transactions have also been addressed. These modifications reduce compliance challenges and enhance real estate liquidity for overseas Indians.

Khanderao emphasized that these initiatives together indicate a more transparent and appealing investment landscape for NRIs.

Furthermore, he pointed out that India is making bold investments in future growth sectors.

The emphasis on the IndiaAI initiative, which designates Rs 10,000 crore for artificial intelligence, digital infrastructure, data centers, and cloud capabilities, positions India as a significant player in the global AI ecosystem.

Khanderao also mentioned the expansion of Semiconductor Mission 2.0, supported by an investment of Rs 40,000 crore. He indicated that the establishment of rare earth and critical mineral corridors would enhance supply-chain resilience in semiconductors, electric vehicles, electronics, and defense manufacturing.

Increased defense allocations to Rs 7.8 lakh crore further promote high-tech and strategic defense self-sufficiency, he added. This could also bolster India’s status as a global player in defense manufacturing and exports.

Khanderao concluded that the Budget 2026 reflects a forward-thinking strategy, enabling cleaner investment pathways for NRIs while laying the groundwork for a technologically advanced and self-reliant India.

Moreover, he noted that a more robust India aligns with US strategic interests. 'As a crucial global partner to the US, a strong India benefits the US, particularly in counterbalancing China in the Indo-Pacific,' he stated.

Point of View

It is vital to recognize that this budget not only aims to bolster India's economy but also seeks to align the interests of non-resident Indians with the nation's growth trajectory. The measures proposed reflect a commitment to inclusivity and progress in a rapidly changing global landscape.
