India-Africa trade tops $100 billion in FY25, cumulative investment crosses $75 billion
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
India's cumulative investment in Africa has surpassed $75 billion, concentrated in telecommunications, pharmaceuticals, infrastructure, and agriculture, according to figures compiled by the India Africa Entrepreneurship Forum (IAEF). Bilateral trade between the two regions climbed from $7 billion in 2001 to over $98 billion in 2023, with more recent data pointing to an even sharper acceleration.
Trade Crosses $100 Billion Mark
James Vos, Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth at the City of Cape Town, cited figures showing India-Africa trade exceeded $100 billion during the 2024-2025 financial year, up from $56 billion in 2019-2020. Vos described this growth as 'the first of greater advances,' signalling that both sides view the current momentum as a baseline rather than a ceiling.
Cape Town Summit Brings 26 Nations Together
The sixth India-Africa Entrepreneurship and Investment Summit, held in Cape Town from 13 to 15 July 2026, drew delegates from 26 countries. Working groups at the summit addressed regional investment, digital skills, pharmaceuticals, renewable energy, green industrialisation, climate-smart agriculture, the rise of fintech ecosystems in sub-Saharan Africa, and trade integration under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
The IAEF also released a ranking of the 100 most influential Indian-origin entrepreneurs operating on the continent, drawing from countries including Kenya, Ghana, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Botswana, Madagascar, and Mauritius. Among those recognised was Chetan Chug, chairman of the Winmart and SOMIKA Group in the DRC.
India's Diaspora as a Strategic Bridge
The IAEF estimates Africa's Indian diaspora at approximately three million people, presenting this community as a historic driver of commercial and cultural exchange between the two regions. The private-sector summit in Cape Town took place nearly six weeks after the fourth India-Africa Forum Summit, an intergovernmental meeting held in New Delhi from 28 to 31 May 2026.
Government and Private Figures Diverge
Indian officials cited during the New Delhi summit placed cumulative investment at approximately $80 billion over the 1996-2025 period, complemented by more than 190 lines of credit worth over $10 billion benefiting 41 African countries in areas such as drinking water, agriculture, transport, energy, and digital connectivity. The gap between this government estimate and the IAEF's private-investment figure underscores the difficulty of accurately measuring a partnership that blends public financing, concessional credit, and decades of accumulated private capital.
According to the IAEF, India and Africa together represent a combined economic potential of close to $7 trillion, with growing opportunity in healthcare, artificial intelligence, fintech, climate technologies, manufacturing, logistics, and digital infrastructure. How that potential is unlocked — and measured — will define the partnership's next chapter.
