New Delhi, April 1 (NationPress) India’s defence exports have reached an unprecedented level of Rs 23,622 crore (approximately $2.76 billion) in the recently concluded FY25, marking an increase of Rs 2,539 crore or 12.04 percent from Rs 21,083 crore in FY24, as stated by the government on Tuesday.

The defence public sector undertakings (DPSUs) demonstrated a remarkable growth of 42.85 percent in their exports during FY25, signifying the escalating acceptance of Indian products in the international market and the Indian defence industry’s capacity to integrate into the global supply chain.

In FY25, the private sector contributed Rs 15,233 crore while DPSUs accounted for Rs 8,389 crore in defence exports, compared to Rs 15,209 crore and Rs 5,874 crore in FY24, respectively.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh remarked on social media platform X that under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India is on a path to achieve the ambitious goal of increasing defence exports to Rs 50,000 crore by 2029.

India has transitioned from being a heavily import-dependent military entity to one that prioritizes self-sufficiency and domestic production.

In a substantial enhancement of defence exports, a wide variety of products, including ammunition, arms, sub-systems/systems, and parts and components, have been delivered to approximately 80 countries during the last fiscal year.

According to the ministry, the Department of Defence Production has established a specialized portal for the application and processing of export authorisation requests, issuing 1,762 Export Authorisations in FY 2024-25, an increase from 1,507 in the previous year, demonstrating a growth of 16.92 percent.

The total number of exporters also increased by 17.4 percent in the same timeframe.

The government aims to attain Rs 3 lakh crore in defence production by 2029, solidifying the nation’s status as a global hub for defence manufacturing. Currently, about 65 percent of defence equipment is produced domestically, a significant change from the previous 65-70 percent reliance on imports.

A robust defence industrial base comprises 16 DPSUs, over 430 licensed companies, and roughly 16,000 MSMEs, bolstering indigenous production capabilities, as reported by the Ministry of Defence.
