New Delhi, Nov 4 (NationPress) Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri announced on Tuesday that India is embarking on a transformative journey in energy as seven sedimentary basins are being analyzed utilizing cutting-edge technology for oil and gas exploration nationwide.

Mission Anveshan, a significant seismic mapping initiative in India's history for oil and gas, has been initiated under the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This Rs 792 crore program, launched in October 2024, aims to conduct seismic surveys across 20,000 ground line kilometres (GLK), with over 8,000 GLK already completed,” the minister stated.

“From the arid landscapes of Rajasthan to the ocean depths of the KG Basin, Bharat is charting its own energy destiny,” he added.

With 1 million square km of offshore regions now accessible for oilfield exploration, Puri confirmed that 99 percent of the 'No-Go' zones have been cleared.

The oil and gas blocks available under the Open Acreage Licensing Programme (OALP) are attracting interest from both domestic and international energy firms, with Round X poised to set unprecedented participation and investment standards.

He previously noted that “25 blocks have been designated under OALP-X; 154 exploration blocks are currently active; with 14 new oil and gas discoveries; and ONGC is producing 34,000 BOPD of oil and 3 MMSCMD of gas.”

The Petroleum Ministry has recently solicited feedback on the Draft Petroleum and Natural Gas Rules, Model Revenue Sharing Contract (MRSC), and Petroleum Lease, as part of the national drive to enhance oil and gas exploration. These represent a series of groundbreaking policy reforms aimed at boosting activity in the sector.

The Oilfields (Regulation and Development) Act, enacted in 1948, was amended in March 2025, and the new PNG regulations have been introduced in just three months leading up to OALP Round X, which stands as the largest global exploration and production bidding event.

This moment presents a prime opportunity for entrepreneurs and industry leaders to engage in oil and gas exploration in India. According to Puri, it has never been simpler, quicker, or more lucrative to invest in the nation's energy future.

Point of View

The government's focus on oil and gas exploration through innovative programs like Mission Anveshan signifies a proactive approach to energy independence. This initiative not only underscores India's commitment to sustainable development but also positions it as a competitive player in the global energy market.
