Is India Continuing Its Oil Purchases from Venezuela? Hardeep Puri Speaks Out
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 1 (NationPress) The Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, on Sunday, emphasized India's enduring import of crude oil from Venezuela, asserting that Indian refineries are adept at processing the heavier oil produced by Venezuela.
In an interview with IANS following the recently held India Energy Week 2026, Minister Puri noted that delegations from numerous nations, including Venezuela, participated in the event, reinforcing that India's association with Venezuelan oil has a rich history, with several refineries specifically tailored to manage its distinct characteristics.
He also discussed India's energy sector within the framework of the Union Budget 2026-27.
He characterized the budget as “very positive” and “forward-looking”, stating it will not only enhance India's growth trajectory from its current $4.2 trillion economy but also facilitate the energy transition—an area of significant focus for his Ministry.
He pointed out provisions in the budget that offer advantages to both upstream companies involved in extraction and downstream enterprises operating integrated refineries with petrochemical functionalities.
Regarding critical minerals, Minister Puri mentioned that the responsibility for their development is not solely with his Ministry.
“Multiple Ministries, particularly those related to energy, are engaged in initiatives to promote exploration and discovery within India, and state-owned Oil India Limited is playing an active role in this domain,” he indicated to IANS.
“Recent budget measures will further stimulate exploration activities,” added Minister Puri.
He highlighted that contemporary refineries are no longer constructed merely for crude oil refining; they are designed for integrated petrochemical production and diversified applications, and that the budget's emphasis on these sectors will aid the industry in adjusting to the global shift towards cleaner energy.
Minister Puri's remarks come in light of US President Donald Trump recently asserting that India will procure oil from Venezuela instead of Iran.
Trump stated, “we've already made that deal” and that India would prioritize Venezuelan oil over Iranian crude, as part of Washington's strategy to realign global energy partnerships.
