Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 9 (NationPress) The government announced on Friday that it is cognizant of the US legislation proposing a staggering 500 percent increase in tariffs on nations purchasing energy commodities, including oil from Russia. The government is addressing this matter with utmost care.
During a weekly briefing, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal emphasized the dual objectives of India's energy policy: maintaining stable energy prices and ensuring secure supplies. He confirmed that the government is closely monitoring the developments surrounding the US legislation, known as the “Sanctioning of Russia Act 2025”.
“We acknowledge the proposed bill and are addressing it with great care,” Jaiswal stated during the briefing.
He further reiterated India’s approach to energy sourcing, which has been outlined multiple times. “Our policy is guided by a broad strategy, considering both the evolving global landscape and the necessity to provide energy at affordable prices for our 1.4 billion citizens,” he added.
India has recently reiterated that its oil and gas import policies are strictly aligned with the interests of Indian consumers amid a turbulent global energy market.
“As a major importer of oil and gas, our priority is to protect the interests of Indian consumers in a fluctuating energy environment. Our import strategies are entirely driven by this aim. The twin goals of our energy policy are to ensure stable prices and secure supplies. This involves diversifying our energy sources as necessary to adapt to market conditions,” an earlier MEA statement noted.
Regarding US relations, India has sought to enhance its energy procurement for many years, with significant progress made over the last decade. The current administration has expressed interest in strengthening energy cooperation with India, and discussions are ongoing,” the statement concluded.
