New Delhi, Sep 25 (NationPress) The Wheeled Armoured Platform (WhAP 8x8) -- a cutting-edge modular combat vehicle developed collaboratively by India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL), is set for international export.

Designed for exceptional mobility, survivability, and operational versatility, WhAP 8x8 signifies a remarkable advancement in India's self-reliant defence capabilities and is now ready to take the global stage.

As India's inaugural amphibious wheeled infantry combat vehicle, WhAP 8x8 boasts a protective monocoque hull with scalable ballistic and mine resistance, independent suspension, and a central tyre inflation system, making it adaptable for challenging terrains and combat situations.

Powered by a state-of-the-art engine, it accommodates both manned and unmanned weapon stations, including anti-tank guided missile (ATGM) systems.

Cleared for production and export in October 2019, the DRDO-designed WhAP 8x8 combat vehicle marked a pivotal moment in India's defence innovation.

That same year, the Army requested 198 units to replace aging BRDM-2 vehicles and enhance mechanized infantry capabilities across various terrains.

Featured during the 2023 Republic Day parade, the Armoured Personnel Carrier variant was equipped with composite armour, a 30 mm BMP-2 turret, and advanced blast protection.

With modular seating for 10–12 troops, WhAP emphasizes safety and flexibility. Inducted into the Indian Army in 2022 and the CRPF in 2023, it gained international attention with Morocco's order for 150 units in 2024 and a dedicated assembly line.

The modular design allows for numerous configurations, including infantry fighting vehicle, armoured personnel carrier, reconnaissance vehicle, command post, mortar carrier, and ambulance.

This adaptability makes WhAP suitable for a broad spectrum of military operations, from frontline engagements to humanitarian efforts.

In a significant milestone, Tata Advanced Systems inaugurated its first international defence manufacturing facility in Berrechid, Morocco, to produce the WhAP 8x8.

The plant, covering 20,000 square meters, is Morocco's largest defence manufacturing site and the first established by an Indian private firm abroad.

The factory will initially supply the Royal Moroccan Army, with plans to extend exports to other allied nations, especially in Africa.

India's Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, who launched the facility alongside Moroccan officials, highlighted that this initiative embodies India's evolving defence vision—transforming from “Make in India” to “Make with Friends” and “Make for the World.”

This project is anticipated to create substantial employment, enhance local technical skills, and strengthen strategic ties between India and Morocco. With WhAP 8x8, India demonstrates its capability to design, develop, and deliver advanced combat platforms on a global scale, reinforcing its status as a credible player in the international defence sector.

This represents a new era in India's quest for strategic autonomy and international defence collaboration.
