New Delhi, March 26 (NationPress) In a significant enhancement to India’s precision strike capabilities, the Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) along with the Indian Navy successfully conducted a flight test of the indigenously-developed Vertically-Launched Short-Range Surface-to-Air Missile (VLSRSAM) on Wednesday, as per an official statement.
The test firing took place at the Integrated Test Range (ITR), Chandipur, located off the coast of Odisha, around noon on Wednesday. The missile was launched from a land-based vertical launcher targeting a high-speed aerial object at a very close range and low altitude, showcasing the missile system's Near-Boundary-Low Altitude capability.
During this test, the missile successfully destroyed the target, demonstrating the high turn rate necessary for engaging targets at short distances and proving the missile’s agility, reliability, and pinpoint accuracy, according to the statement.
The test was executed with all weapon system components arranged in combat-ready configuration. These components included a missile equipped with an indigenous Radio Frequency seeker, Multi-Function Radar, and Weapon Control System, all of which performed as anticipated.
The system's performance was validated through flight data collected by various range instruments developed by ITR Chandipur, as stated.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated the DRDO, Indian Navy, and industry partners, calling the missile system a testament to India’s robust design and development capabilities in defence R&D. "It will serve as an excellent force multiplier for the Navy," he noted.
Secretary of Defence R&D and DRDO Chairman, Dr Samir V. Kamat, also extended his congratulations to the DRDO and Indian Navy teams on this successful flight test, stating that the missile, armed with modern technologies, will provide a significant technological boost to the armed forces.
