IndiGo on Monday, 15 June became the first airline to operate commercial flights from Noida International Airport (NIA) in Jewar, Uttar Pradesh, marking the formal launch of the Delhi-NCR region's second major airport. The inaugural arrival came from Lucknow, followed shortly by the first departure to Bengaluru.

Network at Launch

IndiGo will directly serve more than 16 destinations across India from NIA. Beyond point-to-point routes, the airline's network enables one-stop connectivity across 14 city pairs, including Amritsar–Jodhpur, Bareilly–Bhopal, Bareilly–Jaipur, Bareilly–Jodhpur, Dharamshala–Jodhpur, Chandigarh–Bareilly, Chandigarh–Kishangarh, Chandigarh–Pantnagar, Jammu–Jodhpur, Jaipur–Dharamshala, Jaipur–Pantnagar, Kishangarh–Bhopal, Pantnagar–Jaipur, and Pantnagar–Jodhpur. The connections are designed to improve air access between tier-2 and tier-3 cities and major metros.

What the Airport Offers

Phase one of Noida International Airport has been completed with an annual passenger handling capacity of approximately 12 million. The operational infrastructure comprises a runway, an integrated terminal building, and an air traffic control tower. Strategically positioned along the Yamuna Expressway, NIA is positioned to serve as a key aviation and logistics hub complementing existing capacity in the region.

Aloke Singh, Chief Strategy Officer of IndiGo, said the opening of Noida International Airport 'marks a new chapter in India's aviation story,' adding that 'Delhi-NCR now joins a select group of global megacities served by multiple airports.'

Christoph Schnellmann, Vice Chairman of Noida International Airport, welcomed IndiGo's inaugural flights as 'the beginning of a new chapter for NIA.' He noted that as the launch carrier, IndiGo would connect the airport to key destinations across India 'from day one,' and expressed intent to work closely with the airline to support growth in 'aviation, trade and tourism across the region.'

Why This Matters

The launch makes Delhi-NCR one of the few Indian metropolitan regions with two operational commercial airports, alongside Indira Gandhi International Airport. This comes amid sustained growth in Indian aviation demand, with tier-2 and tier-3 city connectivity emerging as a key battleground for low-cost carriers. Notably, NIA's location in Jewar is expected to ease congestion pressure on IGI Airport and open new catchment areas in western Uttar Pradesh and parts of Rajasthan. The airport's phased development plan is expected to expand capacity further in subsequent phases as traffic grows.
