Sohra, June 4 (NationPress) Raja Raghuvanshi, a 29-year-old resident of Indore, was tragically found murdered in a deep gorge near Weisawdong Falls in Meghalaya's Sohra (Cherrapunjee), with police confirming he was killed with a dao (machete). This grim discovery came after the couple vanished on May 23 during their visit to this picturesque area.
His wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi, aged 27, remains unaccounted for as extensive search operations are underway.
Rescue teams, including the NDRF, SDRF, and Special Operations Team (SOT), are actively searching for Sonam, while investigators have successfully located Raja's mobile phone and the suspected murder weapon - a dao machete - at the gorge's lower levels.
According to East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem, "The search effort continues at Weisawdong Falls. The gorge comprises three layers, and our teams have reached the deepest level. We have retrieved the victim's phone and the weapon utilized in the crime. Both the dao and a knife have been confiscated."
A murder and evidence tampering case has been filed, and this investigation is being prioritized.
SP Syiem stated, "This is a special report case that is being treated with utmost urgency. A Special Investigation Team, led by the SP City, has been constituted, which includes the DSP of Crime, DSP City and Operations, SDPO Sohra, and two sub-inspectors - one as the Investigating Officer and the other as an Assistant."
Raja's remains were retrieved on Monday after a police drone located them in the gorge beneath the Weisawdong Parking Lot at Riat Arliang.
The recovery was conducted with independent local witnesses present. Family members identified the body via a tattoo on his right arm that read 'Raja'.
At the site, police discovered a woman's white shirt, a strip of Pentra 40 medication, a fragment of an LCD screen from a Vivo phone, and a smartwatch still attached to Raja's wrist.
His remains have been sent to NEIGRIHMS in Shillong for a post-mortem to determine whether Raja died before or after being pushed into the gorge.
