Shillong, June 2 (NationPress) A rescue team in Meghalaya has discovered the body of the husband while the search for the wife continues. This tragic finding comes 11 days after the couple from Madhya Pradesh went missing on May 23 during their visit to the scenic Sohra-Cherrapunji region of the northeastern state.
A police official from Meghalaya stated that the couple, Sonam (27) and her husband Raja Raghuvanshi (29), vanished on May 23. On Monday, Raja's body was located after a police drone identified it in a steep gorge beneath the Weisawdong Parking Lot at Riat Arliang. The inquest was conducted with independent witnesses present, and Raja's relatives confirmed his identity through a distinctive tattoo on his right hand that reads 'Raja.'
At the scene, a woman's white shirt, a Pentra 40 strip, a portion of a Vivo mobile phone's LCD screen, and a smartwatch were also retrieved.
The body has been sent to NEIGRIHMS, Shillong, for a post-mortem to ascertain the cause of death. The police are thoroughly investigating the case, and no scenarios, including foul play, are being dismissed at this time, as stated by the official.
The fate of the wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi, remains a mystery. The recovery of the body was achieved through the relentless efforts of the police, who executed an extensive search operation despite adverse weather conditions over the previous days.
A murder case is being opened, with a Special Investigation Team (SIT) set up to oversee the investigation. The search team is composed of police, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and members of the West Jaintia Hills District Adventure Mountaineering Club.
According to a police representative, the newlywed couple, originally from Indore, had been exploring Meghalaya since May 20 for their honeymoon. They toured several locations before arriving at the Sohra-Cherrapunji area. The couple had rented a two-wheeler to explore the stunning surroundings prior to their disappearance. Their hired vehicle was found abandoned approximately 15 km from Sohra town. Their mobile phones have been inactive since the night of May 24.
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav and officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) had discussions with Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma last week regarding the search operation's progress.
Sangma expressed, "We consider tourists as part of our family. The residents of the Sohra-Cherrapunji areas have also treated the tourists as their own. A significant number of villagers are now participating in the search operation."
"I am continually overseeing the search and rescue efforts," the Chief Minister stated. Madhya Pradesh MPs Shankar Lalwani and Sumer Singh Solanki traveled to Meghalaya as well and met with Director General of Police I. Nongrang and Chief Secretary D.P. Wahlang to discuss the ongoing search efforts.
