Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, Feb 22 (NationPress) The discussions regarding seat allocation within the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA) intensified on Sunday, as the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) officially requested five Assembly constituencies in light of the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
After a series of talks at ‘Anna Arivalayam', the DMK headquarters, IUML leader Kader Mohideen informed the media that the party is seeking five seats from the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and emphasized that at least four constituencies should be reserved for them.
“We have requested five seats and underscored that a minimum of four should be allocated to us,” he stated.
The DMK has initiated formal negotiations with its alliance partners and had previously formed a seven-member committee to manage the seat-sharing discussions.
This committee is led by senior leader and MP T.R. Baalu, and includes Minister K.N. Nehru, MPs Tiruchi Siva and A. Raja, organizing secretary R.S. Bharathi, and Ministers E.V. Velu and M.R.K. Panneerselvam.
The IUML team, headed by Kader Mohideen, was the first to engage in formal conversations with the DMK leadership.
During the discussions, Mohideen noted that T.R. Baalu hinted that the total number of seats assigned to alliance partners this time might be fewer than in the last elections.
Additionally, Mohideen shared that the IUML has requested a reassessment of seat distribution in three constituencies, proposing to reduce one seat in specific areas as part of the ongoing talks.
He further mentioned that the party is eager to ensure sufficient representation in local elections throughout the state.
Despite advocating for its demands, the IUML displayed a willingness to compromise and reaffirmed its dedication to the alliance.
“Whether we receive five seats, three seats, or even two, it is not a concern. Regardless of the number of seats we are given, we will remain within the DMK alliance,” Mohideen stated, emphasizing the party's commitment to its partnership in the Secular Progressive Alliance.
As the Assembly elections approach, the DMK is anticipated to continue discussions with its other allies in the upcoming days to finalize the seat-sharing arrangement.
