Jagan accuses Chandrababu of neglecting Sugali Preeti rape-murder case
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy has accused incumbent Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu of once again sidelining the Sugali Preeti case — the alleged rape and murder of a Class 10 student at a private school in Kurnool in 2017. Jagan made the accusation on 26 May after Preeti's parents, Parvathi and Raju Naik, met him at the YSRCP central office in Tadepalli, seeking justice nearly nine years after the crime.
Background of the Case
Sugali Preeti was allegedly raped and murdered at a private school in Kurnool in 2017. According to Jagan, the then-Chandrababu Naidu government failed to identify or punish the culprits. When the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) came to power, Jagan said his administration constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT), ordered a CBI inquiry at the family's request, allotted them a five-cent house site in Kurnool, provided five acres of agricultural land, and secured a government job for the family.
Jagan's Allegations Against the Current Government
'After Chandrababu Naidu returned to power, the case has once again been pushed aside and neglected,' Jagan posted on X. He argued that at a time when the CBI itself has reportedly indicated a lack of sufficient staff and resources to pursue the investigation effectively, the state government's responsibility is to extend full cooperation — instead, he said, it has chosen to remain completely silent.
Jagan also alleged that Preeti's parents have had their pension stopped because they have been speaking out against the government and questioning its inaction. 'It is even more painful to learn this,' he said.
Evidence Already on Record, Says Jagan
Jagan pointed to what he described as substantial material already gathered during the YSRCP government's tenure — including SIT reports, CDFD laboratory reports, and DNA profiling details. 'When such strong evidence and scientific reports are already available, is it not unjust for the state government to remain a mute spectator instead of ensuring that the investigation reaches its logical conclusion?' he asked.
Family Appeals for Justice After Nine Years
Preeti's parents told Jagan that even after nine years, justice has not been delivered, and they described the current coalition government as completely neglecting the case. Jagan assured them of continued support. 'On behalf of YSRCP, we will extend complete legal support to the family until justice is delivered to Sugali Preeti,' he said.
The case now draws renewed political attention, with the opposition pressing the Naidu government for a clear stance on whether it will facilitate the CBI probe or allow it to stall further.
