Jalalabad renamed Parshurampuri: Yogi cabinet approves UP town's new name
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
The Yogi Adityanath cabinet in Uttar Pradesh on Monday, 7 July 2025 officially approved the renaming of Jalalabad town in Shahjahanpur district to 'Parshurampuri', citing the town's significance as the reputed birthplace of Lord Parshuram. The decision was among 29 proposals cleared at the cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Adityanath in Lucknow.
Why Jalalabad Was Renamed
UP Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak, confirming the development to reporters, said residents had long demanded the change. 'For a long time, there had been a demand from the people to change the name of Jalalabad town in Shahjahanpur district. The people had demanded that since this is the birthplace of Lord Parshuram, its name should be Parshurampuri,' he said.
UP Cabinet Minister Suresh Kumar Khanna described the renaming as a 'right tribute' to Lord Parshuram's lineage and to the town's residents. Notably, the proposal had previously received the Union Cabinet's nod as well. Union Minister Jitin Prasad, who hails from Shahjahanpur, called it 'a moment of pride for the Sanatani community.'
Startup Policy and ₹1,000 Crore Fund
In a significant economic move, the cabinet approved the Uttar Pradesh Startup Policy-2026 and the formation of the Uttar Pradesh Startup Mission, aimed at fostering innovation and entrepreneurship across the state. The mission will be constituted under the Societies Registration Act, with its steering committee chaired by the Chief Secretary.
To strengthen the startup ecosystem, the government has earmarked a ₹1,000 crore startup fund, alongside provisions for prototype and seed capital assistance and annual grants for incubators.
Healthcare and University Approvals
The cabinet approved cashless medical facilities of up to ₹5 lakh for approximately 1.60 lakh Home Guards in the state and their dependents — a move that extends healthcare coverage to a large segment of the state's auxiliary security workforce.
Three new universities also received cabinet approval: Maharishi Mahesh Yogi International Agricultural University in Bilhaur, Ajay Kumar Garg University in Ghaziabad, and Thakur Yugraj Singh University in Fatehpur.
Other Key Decisions
Additional approvals included the establishment of a Horticulture College and Research Centre in Raebareli, amendments to pension rules for Public Service Commission Chairman and members, and the issuance of municipal bonds for the Gorakhpur and Moradabad municipal corporations.
With these decisions, the Yogi government has continued its dual track of cultural rebranding alongside economic and institutional expansion — a pattern that is likely to draw both political attention and public debate ahead of the state's electoral cycle.
