Key Takeaways
Srinagar, Jan 12 (NationPress) The J&K Students Association (JKSA) has reached out to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar for assistance in the evacuation of Kashmiri students currently in Iran.
JKSA has implored the highest levels of governance to take immediate action to safeguard the security, dignity, and welfare of Indian students, especially those from the Kashmir Valley, who are studying in Iran.
The Association highlighted that the ongoing turmoil in Iran has left the parents of Kashmiri students in a state of distress, deeply worried for their children's safety and well-being.
According to Nasir Khuehami, the National Convenor of the Association, there is significant concern for the hundreds of Indian students, primarily from Jammu and Kashmir, who have chosen Iran for its affordable education and historical academic connections with India.
Khuehami revealed that many parents have struggled to connect with their children over the past four days, amplifying fears regarding their safety. Reports indicate that phone lines are down, messaging services are unavailable, and social media, often a lifeline, has gone quiet, causing immense psychological stress for families.
He added that nearly 2,000 Kashmiri students are enrolled in medical universities across various provinces in Iran and are dependent on local accommodations, transportation, and essential services, making them particularly susceptible during this period of civil unrest.
Khuehami expressed that the current situation has left many students feeling vulnerable and isolated.
“JKSA has been receiving continuous distress calls from students and their families reporting restricted movement, intermittent internet outages, and a lack of timely safety guidance, alongside the absence of any visible evacuation plans,” he stated.
In light of these concerns, the Association has urged the Prime Minister to instruct the Ministry of External Affairs to set up constant communication between Indian students in Iran and the Indian Embassy in Tehran. This includes establishing dedicated emergency helplines, routine outreach by embassy personnel, and timely advisories.
The Association also called for the formulation of a comprehensive evacuation strategy. Khuehami emphasized that if the security landscape worsens or essential infrastructure is compromised, prompt evacuation could be vital.
“The Indian government must be ready to act swiftly to ensure the safe return of Indian students if the situation necessitates,” he concluded.
The Association further urged the Ministry of External Affairs to collaborate closely with the Indian Embassy in Tehran and engage diplomatically with Iranian authorities to ensure the protection and dignity of Indian students, calling for swift action to prevent any harm to Indian nationals studying in Iran.
