Srinagar, March 9 (NationPress) - The National Convenor of the J&K Students' Association (JKSA), Nasir Khuehami, met with Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri on Monday to advocate for the swift evacuation of Indian students trapped in Iran due to rising tensions in the area.
In a statement released on the same day, Khuehami expressed serious concerns for the safety of Indian students, particularly those hailing from Jammu and Kashmir, who are currently caught in the turmoil of escalating airstrikes and hostilities.
“The discussion, which lasted around 15 minutes, took place on the sidelines of the Raisina Dialogue 2026 in New Delhi. I made the Foreign Secretary aware of the deteriorating security landscape in Iran and the heightened fears among Indian students and their families,” the statement detailed.
“I conveyed the growing panic among students amid continuous airstrikes, explosions, and the rapidly changing conflict environment. I urged the Government of India and the Ministry of External Affairs to implement urgent measures for the safety and evacuation of Indian students as soon as possible,” Khuehami remarked.
He also noted that families back home are deeply concerned as the situation worsens, emphasizing the need for immediate government intervention and ongoing communication with the students stranded abroad.
“The Association has received numerous distress calls and messages from anxious parents of Kashmiri students located in cities like Qom, Urmia, Arak, and other areas in Iran.
“The students are living in fear and anxiety due to reports of ongoing airstrikes and missile strikes across various regions of the country. We are urging the Ministry to step in and facilitate the immediate evacuation of Indian students from Iran or arrange for their relocation to safer areas until stability returns,” the statement added.
During their discussion, Foreign Secretary Misri assured Khuehami that the Government of India is actively collaborating with Iranian authorities and the Indian Embassy in Tehran to keep a close watch on the situation.
He informed that the relocation of students from high-risk areas is being executed in phases, contingent on the evolving security circumstances.
Misri stated, “We have been receiving a significant number of calls, and I recognize the concerns. We are doing everything in our power, and students from the most affected areas, including Tehran, have already been moved to safer locations.”
“He affirmed that the safety and well-being of Indian students is the government's highest priority, assuring that all necessary actions are being taken to ensure their protection and facilitate their safe return to India.
“I expressed hope that the Government of India will take timely and decisive actions to ensure the safety and security of Indian students currently in Iran. The Association is confident that the Ministry of External Affairs will provide all possible support and take measures to protect their lives and welfare during this challenging and uncertain time,” Khuehami concluded.
