JNUTA Appeals to Dharmendra Pradhan for Action Against JNU VC Over Caste Remarks
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 5 (NationPress) The Jawaharlal Nehru University Teachers' Association (JNUTA) has formally approached Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, requesting a clarification regarding the government's position on the contentious remarks related to caste made by JNU's Vice Chancellor, Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit. Furthermore, the JNUTA has called for the removal of VC Pandit.
In an open letter, the JNUTA emphasized that VC Pandit's comments made during a podcast have gained significant attention and necessitate an official response. They accused her of expressing political alignment with the central government and suggested that her appointment was influenced by this allegiance.
The association argued that her statements implied government endorsement of her views on caste. Additionally, they referenced her critique of the ‘University Grants Commission (Promotion of Equity in Higher Education Institutions) Regulations, 2026’, which was announced on January 13, 2026, raising concerns over the Ministry's lack of response.
JNUTA highlighted the incident where police detained students during a march towards the Ministry without taking any action against the VC. The absence of a response from the government creates a perception of indifference towards caste discrimination in higher education.
The teachers' body reminded the authorities of their previous communications in September and November 2025, seeking VC Pandit's dismissal due to allegations of mismanagement, improper use of the ‘None Found Suitable’ clause in reserved appointments, biased promotions, and a decline in representation of women and SC/ST students.
In reference to the podcast, JNUTA criticized VC Pandit's characterization of caste discrimination as a “manufactured reality” stemming from “permanent victimhood,” labeling such comments as unacceptable and making her unsuitable to lead Jawaharlal Nehru University.
Dismissing her claims that the remarks were misrepresented, JNUTA pointed out that the podcast is publicly accessible and challenged her assertion that the draft UGC regulations were introduced “secretively.”
The letter, co-signed by JNUTA President Surajit Mazumdar and Secretary Meenakshi Sundriyal, called upon Union Education Minister Pradhan to take prompt action in this matter, asserting that the credibility of the Education Ministry is on the line.
