Bengaluru, Aug 1 (NationPress) In response to the conviction of Prajwal Revanna, the grandson of former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda, in a case involving an obscene video and rape, Special Public Prosecutor Ashok Nayak, representing the state, expressed that justice has been achieved for the victim and deemed the conviction a crucial lesson.
Speaking to reporters on Friday following the verdict announcement at the Special Court for MPs/MLAs in Bengaluru, Nayak remarked, “The court has declared Prajwal Revanna guilty in the rape case. The sentencing phase will take place on Saturday.”
“I want to express our satisfaction that justice has been rendered to the victim. I also commend the Special Investigation Team (SIT) Chief B.K. Singh, SP Sumana, Seema Latkar, and Investigating Officer Shobha. This conviction serves as a significant lesson,” Nayak stated.
Additional Public Prosecutor H.K. Jagadish mentioned that the court found Prajwal Revanna guilty based on all charges against him, including Sections 376 (N), 376 (K), 354 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), and Section 66 of the Information Technology Act.
“The court assessed 118 witnesses listed in the charge sheet. Furthermore, 180 documents were submitted, and 28 witnesses were examined during the trial. After evaluating all evidence, the court concluded that Prajwal Revanna was guilty,” Jagadish explained.
He further emphasized that the victim's testimony was pivotal in the conviction process. “Her statement was a critical piece of evidence. The court also gave significant weight to the digital evidence presented against Prajwal Revanna,” he added.
Jagadish pointed out that the convict made multiple attempts to stall the legal proceedings. “He approached the High Court twice—first claiming he hadn’t received copies of the obscene videos, and later arguing that he was unable to secure legal representation. The High Court upheld the trial court's decision on both occasions,” he noted.
The Special Public Prosecutor also reiterated that, in accordance with Supreme Court directives and the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), rape trials must be finalized within two months. “This case was taken to the Special Court in December 2024. Following two to three months for charge framing and hearings, the conviction has now been secured,” Jagadish concluded.
