Bhopal/New Delhi, April 7 (NationPress) The former Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Kamal Nath, expressed his discontent on Monday regarding the Union government's decision to raise the prices of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders, labeling it an ‘anti-people measure’.
Kamal Nath (78) pointed out that the Union government has already inflicted the burden of inflation on everyday citizens, stating that the hike of Rs 50 in the cost of domestic gas will impose an additional financial strain on families.
“The costs of essential kitchen staples, such as pulses, vegetables, edible oils, flour, and more, are already soaring, making it increasingly difficult for families to adequately feed their children. The rise in domestic gas cylinder prices will further disrupt the monthly budgets of millions across the nation,” said Kamal Nath.
He highlighted that due to rampant inflation, many individuals are caught in a cycle of debt and struggling to meet even their family's fundamental needs, including their children's education.
“At a time when the government should be implementing measures to alleviate the effects of inflation, it has chosen to increase the price of domestic gas cylinders. It is imperative that the government immediately retracts this price hike for the sake of public interest,” he urged.
Kamal Nath, who has overseen seven ministries, including commerce and industry, during the Congress administration at the Centre, accused the ruling BJP of intentionally eliminating subsidies on LPG cylinders.
Previously, Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, confirmed the price rise of domestic liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) by Rs 50 per cylinder starting April 8.
Under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, a cylinder will now cost Rs 550, up from Rs 500, while non-Ujjwala prices will rise to Rs 853 per cylinder.
“The price for a cylinder of LPG will climb by Rs 50. For PMUY beneficiaries, it will go from Rs 500 to Rs 550, and for others, it will increase from Rs 803 to Rs 853. This is a move we will evaluate periodically,” stated the Union Minister.
