Karnataka Government Declares Three Days of Mourning for S.M. Krishna

Bengaluru, Nov 10 (NationPress) The Karnataka government has initiated a three-day mourning period across the state in response to the passing of veteran politician S.M. Krishna.

During this time, public entertainment events have been suspended statewide.

S.M. Krishna, who served as the former Chief Minister of Karnataka, passed away on Tuesday in Bengaluru after battling a prolonged illness, at the age of 93.

The Tricolour will be flown at half-mast until December 12, as stated by Elisha Andrews, Deputy Secretary of the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms.

His funeral will take place with state honors on Wednesday in his birthplace, Somanahalli, Andrews confirmed.

In memory of the late leader, a holiday has been announced for all schools, colleges, and government offices in Karnataka on December 11, according to the official order.

Condolences have been pouring in following the news of S.M. Krishna's passing.

Dinesh Gundu Rao, the Minister for Health, expressed, “I am deeply saddened by the loss of S.M. Krishna, a true visionary and architect of modern Bengaluru. I had the privilege to work alongside him, witnessing his exceptional leadership and vast knowledge.”

“His guidance inspired many, and his unwavering commitment to Karnataka's progress will continue to motivate future generations. Rest in peace, sir,” Minister Rao added.

Former Chief Minister and BJP MP Basavaraj Bommai remarked, “The news of S.M. Krishna's passing has left me deeply distressed. He was one of Karnataka's most astute politicians from the pre-Independence era, holding various administrative roles at both state and national levels.”

“With his loss, the nation grieves the departure of a significant leader. He lived a principled life, earning widespread respect and admiration,” he stated.

After studying abroad, S.M. Krishna entered politics with strong socialist ideals, winning his first election as an Independent candidate.

He had a distinguished career serving in all four legislative bodies: the Legislative Assembly, Legislative Council, Lok Sabha, and Rajya Sabha.

“He made significant contributions as a state minister, Chief Minister, Governor of Maharashtra, and Union Minister,” Bommai noted.

S.M. Krishna's eloquence and dignified demeanor serve as a model for young politicians and a guide for administrators.

“He played a vital role in Karnataka’s development, especially in promoting Bengaluru and the IT-BT sectors,” he praised.

“The Mid-Day Meal Scheme he introduced was a great success. He maintained his integrity and self-respect throughout his career,” Bommai highlighted.

“After joining the BJP, he became a trusted ally to our Prime Minister. His passing represents the end of an era. I hope his legacy inspires us all. S.M. Krishna had a close personal relationship with me and my father,” he stated.

“I feel immense sorrow at his passing. I pray for strength for his family to endure this loss, and may his soul rest in peace,” he added.

Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwara expressed profound grief over Krishna's death.

“S.M. Krishna was a remarkable leader and a visionary without equal. His loss is an irreparable blow to Karnataka,” HM Parameshwara remarked.

He emphasized S.M. Krishna's unique accomplishments as Deputy Chief Minister, Chief Minister, Governor of Maharashtra, and Union Minister.

He credited S.M. Krishna for putting Karnataka — particularly Bengaluru — on the global map as a center for IT-BT, creating jobs for thousands.

His leadership and vision were exemplary in guiding the state's development.

HM Parameshwara viewed S.M. Krishna's political journey as an inspiration and prayed for eternal peace for his soul.

He also wished that God grants strength to his family, supporters, and close associates as they cope with this loss.
