Karnataka Minister Hebbalkar Advocates for Complete Eradication of Maoism Following Gowda Encounter

Udupi, (Karnataka) Nov 30 (NationPress) Just days after the notorious Maoist Vikram Gowda was eliminated in an encounter in Karnataka's Udupi district, the state Women and Child Welfare Minister, Laxmi Hebbalkar, reiterated the call for the absolute eradication of Naxalism (Maoism).
Speaking to reporters in Udupi, Hebbalkar, who also oversees the district, highlighted the ongoing commitment of both the Central and state governments to dismantle Maoist activities.
During a discussion reflecting on the varying opinions regarding the encounters conducted by security forces, the minister asserted that the recent action against Gowda was executed within the legal framework.
"It is the government's mandate to suppress and manage Naxalism. The encounter occurred during a combing operation. Maoist Vikram Gowda was armed and opened fire on the security personnel. Had the police not responded, the lives of security forces would have been at risk," she stated.
Hebbalkar emphasized that the government has fulfilled its responsibilities in accordance with the law.
"We are prepared to provide clarifications to those who remain skeptical. There is a call for a judicial inquiry. It is up to the government to decide if the case regarding Vikram Gowda's encounter will be submitted for judicial review," she added, mentioning her intention to consult with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Home Minister G. Parameshwara on the matter.
On November 18, Karnataka Police successfully neutralized one of the most wanted Maoist leaders in southern India, Vikram Gowda, during an encounter in the Kabbinale forest area of Udupi district. Police had been monitoring Gowda closely, gathering reliable information about his movements before initiating the operation. He had been on the run for the past 20 years, managing to evade capture during previous police operations.
However, his three accomplices managed to escape, and security forces continue their combing operations in the vicinity.
Home Minister Parameshwara noted that the state government has previously integrated several Maoists into mainstream society in the Pavagada region of Tumakuru district through dialogue.
"These efforts toward mainstreaming are ongoing. The state government will support Naxals willing to surrender their weapons and reintegrate into society. This initiative will persist, though such encounters may arise when they attempt to evade law enforcement in forested areas," he remarked after the encounter with Gowda.
