Koppal, Aug 21 (NationPress) The Karnataka Police have initiated legal action against MLA Basanagouda Patil Yatnal following his controversial statement concerning a Rs 5 lakh reward for Hindu youths who marry Muslim women, officials confirmed on Thursday.
The FIR was lodged at the Koppal City Police Station after a complaint was filed by Abdul Kalam, a local resident of Kuvempunagar.
In his complaint, Kalam asserted that Yatnal's comments were designed to incite hatred between communities.
Additionally, Kalam pointed out that the MLA exhibited a derogatory and biased attitude towards Muslim women, effectively insulting them.
Yatnal made these contentious statements on August 3 during a visit to Koppal city, where he consoled the family of a Hindu activist, Gavisiddappa Nayaka, who was brutally murdered by a group of men allegedly due to his relationship with a Muslim minor.
After meeting with the grieving family, Yatnal announced a program to reward Hindu youths marrying Muslim women with Rs 5 lakh.
He proclaimed, "This initiative will provide a strong response to those who commit such murders."
Yatnal also remarked that while the state government offers protection to minorities, the same cannot be said for Hindu youths.
His comments have sparked significant political backlash in the state, particularly following his recent expulsion from the BJP.
Yatnal added, "Gavisiddappa Nayaka was attacked with a machete and other sharp weapons in front of a mosque, yet no one intervened to stop the attack. In cases of love jihad, the government stands by the minorities."
It’s worth noting that Gavisiddappa Nayaka was allegedly murdered on the night of August 3.
On August 14, Qamar Junaid Qureshi, District President of Khidmat-e-Millat, also filed a complaint at the Roza police station in Kalaburagi.
He claimed, "Yatnal consistently stirs controversy and disrupts communal harmony with his derogatory remarks, particularly against Muslims. His latest comments have insulted Muslim girls."
