Kalaburagi, April 15 (NationPress) To safeguard the youth from succumbing to detrimental habits such as drugs and opium, the Karnataka government is enforcing stringent measures, stated Priyank Kharge, the Minister for Rural Development and Panchayat Raj, IT and BT, as well as the In-charge of Kalaburagi District.

The minister emphasized that the police department must play a proactive role in this initiative and enhance public consciousness.

His remarks were made during a press conference following his inspection of narcotic substances and Schedule H drugs confiscated from drug traffickers by the police at the Kalaburagi Police Commissioner’s office.

He mentioned that a high-level meeting chaired by Home Minister G. Parameshwara had engaged in extensive discussions regarding this issue, leading to firm directives for relevant departments aimed at completely eliminating the drug problem.

Kharge noted that compared to the previous year, the police within the commissionerate have been conducting ongoing raids, leading to the seizure of narcotics such as ganja, other drugs, and Schedule H substances, with legal action taken against both vendors and consumers.

In 2024, there were 58 cases filed, resulting in 59 arrests and the confiscation of 20 kilograms of ganja. In contrast, 2025 saw 172 cases, 176 arrests, and the seizure of 100 kilograms of ganja along with 776 kilograms of Schedule H drugs.

The minister reported that the total estimated value of the confiscated items is approximately Rs 23 lakh.

Kharge also mentioned that numerous awareness initiatives will be launched to shield the youth, particularly students, from the drug scourge.

“These initiatives will take place in schools, colleges, and universities, followed by campaigns aimed at raising public awareness,” he stated.

Additionally, the minister indicated that efforts are underway to fill vacant teaching positions in the Kalyana Karnataka region.

“Initially, 5,520 teaching roles will be filled in primary schools. Comprehensive development of 23 parks, including Appan Kere within the Kalaburagi City Corporation limits, is also in progress,” Priyank Kharge added.

Minister for Medical Education Sharanprakash Patil announced that a job fair scheduled for Wednesday aims to create around 1 lakh job opportunities.

“Over 22,000 candidates have already registered. More than 280 companies will participate, selecting candidates based on their educational qualifications and offering immediate appointment letters,” he concluded.
