Did Raju Karpada Hold a 'Secret Meeting' with Gujarat's Dy CM?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Ahmedabad, Feb 12 (NationPress) The political controversy surrounding the resignation of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Raju Karpada escalated on Thursday when party MLA Gopal Italia claimed that Karpada engaged in a "secret meeting" with Gujarat's Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi in Gandhinagar and had interactions with an IPS officer while incarcerated.
In response to prior accusations made by Karpada against the AAP, Italia asserted that the former State President of AAP's farmer wing was acting under duress related to his unresolved criminal cases.
"Raju Karpada held a secret meeting with the Gujarat Home Minister in Gandhinagar," Italia revealed, further stating, "I have verified the identity of the IPS officer who met him in jail and the nature of their discussions."
Italia also pointed out that typically, no inmate is released after 6 p.m., yet Karpada was granted release at 10 p.m. on the day he obtained bail.
"Six o'clock is the standard cutoff. Raju Karpada is the first individual to have been released at 10 p.m. Following him, Pravin Ram was released the next day at 2 p.m. This was a result of his arrangement with BJP leaders," he declared.
He went on to mention that conclusive hearings in two cases against Karpada were set for the Surendranagar court on the same day.
"Today marks the final hearing for both of his cases. There was pressure on him that if he did not accuse AAP and Gopal Italia according to the BJP's script, he could face severe consequences in court," Italia charged.
Italia added, "Had Karpada not held a press conference to accuse the AAP, the likelihood of a harsh prison sentence would have been substantial."
Karpada, who stepped down from all party roles on Wednesday, faces two cases under Section 307.
In one case, the Surendranagar court has reportedly sentenced him to five years in prison, while the second case awaits judgment.
It is alleged that four to five members of Karpada's family are implicated in the latter case.
Earlier on Thursday, AAP's state president Pravin Ram mentioned that he spent 108 days in jail with Karpada in Bhavnagar and Rajkot, and noted Karpada's anxiety regarding the two cases.
"He frequently expressed worry that if he were convicted in the second case, he would be unable to run for elections," Ram stated.
He accused the BJP of using outdated court cases to instill fear and apply pressure.
He also called for the Rajkot and Bhavnagar jail administrations to release CCTV footage.
"If the CCTV footage is disclosed, the truth will emerge," he claimed, questioning how Karpada's bail bond was processed so quickly when others who were granted bail the same day did not experience similar expediency.
