Kashmir Valley Sees Return to Normalcy After Lifting of Restrictions
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Srinagar, March 7 (NationPress) After a six-day period of restrictions, life in the Kashmir Valley resumed its normal pace on Saturday as authorities lifted all limitations, allowing residents to return to their daily activities. Shops, private transportation, various businesses, public transport, banks, post offices, and government facilities began operations as they typically would across the entire Valley.
While daily life resumed, police and security personnel remained deployed to monitor the situation closely as individuals ventured out to purchase essential items.
Moreover, 5G Internet services and calling capabilities for prepaid mobiles were reinstated the previous evening throughout the Valley. These services had been suspended to prevent the dissemination of inappropriate content on social media by potential troublemakers and anti-national elements.
Educational institutions—schools, colleges, and universities—had been ordered to remain closed until March 7, with plans to reopen on Monday. Meanwhile, all examinations scheduled until Saturday were postponed by both Kashmir University and the Central University of Kashmir, with new exam dates to be announced shortly.
Private transportation and foot traffic also resumed in the bustling city center of Lal Chowk in Srinagar. To enforce the restrictions, security forces had set up barricades and concertina wire to block access to the city center over the past five days.
Last week, protests erupted in the Valley following the death of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei due to US-Israeli airstrikes in Tehran. Clashes between protesters and security forces occurred in several locations, particularly in areas with a significant Shia Muslim population.
Authorities imposed restrictions to safeguard civilian lives and property throughout the Valley. Despite the heightened vigilance, police and security forces exhibited remarkable patience and professionalism while managing the situation.
To foster public confidence, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah engaged with civil society members, including representatives from religious, social, and business sectors, as well as other prominent figures on Wednesday. Omar urged the public to express their grief with dignity and discipline, avoiding actions that could disrupt law and order. His efforts received a positive response from the community leaders present.
