Srinagar, Jan 29 (NationPress) A young Kashmiri shawl vendor has sustained several fractures and injuries following a reported mob attack in Uttarakhand.

The Jammu Kashmir Students Association (JKSA) expressed profound shock and sorrow over the violent incident involving an 18-year-old Kashmiri, who was selling shawls with his family in the Vikas Nagar region of Uttarakhand.

According to a statement from JKSA, the teenager was assaulted by a group of extremist individuals, brutally beaten, and left with numerous bruises all over his body.

“He has a fractured left arm and has suffered significant head injuries after being struck with iron rods. Initially, he was taken to a nearby hospital and subsequently referred to Doon Hospital in Dehradun. Following the attack, blood was reportedly oozing from his head,” the statement noted.

Relatives of the victim informed the association that the boy was first interrogated about his identity.

“Upon discovering that the family was from the Muslim community and hails from Kashmir, the violence escalated. The boy was punched repeatedly while other family members were dragged, slapped, and attacked with sharp iron rods,” it added.

Describing the incident as a disturbing reminder of escalating communal profiling and mob violence, JKSA highlighted that the youth was merely attempting to assist his family in earning a respectable livelihood during the harsh winter.

“An 18-year-old selling shawls to support his family was met not with compassion, but with hatred,” the association stated.

JKSA has called upon Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami to take immediate action, ensure an FIR is filed, and hold all the perpetrators accountable under the law.

In another response, Iltija Mufti, a leader from the opposition People's Democratic Party (PDP) and daughter of former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, condemned the attack.

She posted on her social media account, “This 18-year-old Kashmiri shawl vendor was viciously attacked in Uttarakhand with iron rods until his bones were shattered. This is one of many violent acts against Kashmiris in India, where the perpetrators believe they enjoy institutional protection. These are NOT just fringe elements anymore. The BJP is actively mainstreaming these ‘fringe’ individuals who are no longer on the outskirts. “Sir @pushkardhami, may we kindly ask for your intervention?”

She also shared images of the injured teenager on her social media profile.
