Soumen Ghara, the jewellery shop manager, succumbed to his injuries at the scene. His son, Ankur, was also attacked while attempting to stop the assailant. Ankur is currently receiving medical care at the state-run S.S.K.M Medical College & Hospital, also situated in south Kolkata, and is in critical condition.
The attacker has been named as Ashesh Sarkar, also known as Piklu. He fled the scene immediately after the incident and was captured on a nearby CCTV camera as he escaped.
The violent episode occurred at the junction of Beninandan Street and Harish Chatterjee Street, not far from the official residence of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
Local residents reported to police and media that a confrontation erupted after a garbage truck collided with a local shop, damaging part of it.
The late Soumen Ghara became embroiled in this dispute. Amid the chaos, Piklu appeared and escalated the tension. Eyewitnesses detailed how Piklu suddenly brandished a sharp object from his clothing and began to mercilessly stab Ghara.
When Ankur, his young son, intervened to save his father, Piklu turned on him as well, inflicting serious wounds before fleeing the scene. Both father and son were rushed to S.S.K.M, where doctors pronounced Soumen dead.
Authorities from the Kalighat Police Station have launched an investigation. Nearby police stations have been notified, and images of Piklu have been disseminated to aid in his capture.
