Guwahati, Sep 26 (NationPress) The Kaziranga National Park & Tiger Reserve (KNPTR), recognized as India’s seventh UNESCO World Heritage Site, officially reopened its gates to tourists on Friday, signifying the start of the 2025-26 tourism season.
KNPTR Director Sonali Ghosh emphasized that with the reopening, visitors can once again explore the park’s stunning biodiversity, featuring the iconic one-horned rhinoceros, tigers, elephants, and a wide array of bird species.
These efforts underscore Kaziranga’s dedication to wildlife conservation, sustainable tourism, and community involvement, she noted.
The official tourism season for KNPTR typically runs from October to mid-May, as the renowned park and tiger reserve remains closed during the monsoon months due to flooding from June to September each year.
The opening ceremony took place at the Western Range, Bagori.
Prominent figures in attendance included Member of Parliament from Kaziranga, Kamakhya Prasad Tasa, MLA from Khumtai Assembly constituency, Mrinal Saikia, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and Chief Wildlife Warden Vinay Gupta, and District Commissioner of Nagaon, Devasish Sharma, along with senior officials from the district administration.
The festivities commenced at the Western Range, Bagori, featuring a traditional puja to bless the park and officially inaugurate the 2025-26 safari season.
Key highlights included a Pushpanjali to Zubeen Garg and the launch of REC CSR-supported solar drinking water upgrades for 120 anti-poaching camps within Kaziranga.
In the preceding year, KNPTR recorded an unprecedented number of 4,06,564 tourists, which included 17,693 foreign visitors in the 2024-25 season.
Director Sonali Ghosh reported that visitor numbers to Kaziranga have quadrupled over the last decade.
The notable rise in international tourists, now comprising 4.5 percent of total visitors, signifies Kaziranga's growing appeal, thanks to recent innovative initiatives.
Furthermore, the park's revenue saw a significant increase of 21.19 percent in the fiscal year 2024-25 compared to the previous year, generating over Rs 10.90 crore in 2024-25 and exceeding Rs 8.81 crore in 2023-24.
