Kozhikode, March 1 (NationPress) A 15-year-old student from the Kozhikode district, who suffered serious head injuries after being attacked by peers during a farewell party, tragically lost his life on Saturday.

Muhammed Shahabas, a student at M J Higher Secondary School in Elettil, was assaulted on Thursday when a confrontation erupted between two groups of students outside a private tuition center in Thamarassery, near Kozhikode. CCTV footage released on Saturday revealed Shahabas being abandoned near his residence after the altercation.

After returning home, Shahabas was immediately taken to a local hospital. Given the gravity of his injuries, he was later moved to the Kozhikode Medical College Hospital. Despite being admitted to the Intensive Care Unit, he succumbed to his injuries on Saturday.

Initially, five students were apprehended by the police on Thursday. They were presented before the Juvenile Justice Board and subsequently released into their parents' custody. However, following Shahabas's passing, the police upgraded the charges to murder against these five students, all of whom are classmates at the Government Vocational Higher Secondary School in Thamarassery.

A senior police official confirmed, “After the victim's death, the charges were escalated to murder. The parents of the accused have been directed to present the students again before the Juvenile Justice Board. We are also probing the involvement of additional individuals in the incident.”

The conflict that resulted in this tragic assault occurred on February 23, when students from both institutions attended classes at the tuition center. With the Class 10 examinations approaching, a farewell party was organized. During the event, as the students of M J Higher Secondary School performed a dance, students from the Vocational Higher Secondary School reportedly booed when the music abruptly halted. This incited anger among some of the M J Higher Secondary School students, leading to a violent confrontation outside the tuition center.

This incident underscores a concerning trend of youth violence in Kerala, particularly among students.

Union Minister of State for Tourism, Suresh Gopi, addressed the issue, suggesting that cinema might influence such behavior. However, he emphasized, “While cinema may have some impact, it’s crucial that everyone contributes to uplifting society. No one should be misled.”
