Alappuzha, Dec 2 (NationPress) - In a heartbreaking incident, five first-year MBBS students from Kerala's Alappuzha Medical College lost their lives after the vehicle they were in collided with a Kerala State Road Transportation Corporation (KSRTC) bus on Monday night, police confirmed.
The deceased individuals have been identified as Mohammed, Muhasin, Ibrahim, Devanand, and Shreedeep.
The accident occurred around 9 p.m. when the Tavera car, reportedly traveling at high speed, skidded and crashed into the KSRTC bus that was en route from Guruvayur to Kayamkulam.
Eyewitnesses described the scene, stating that the impact was so severe that the car was mangled, ejecting the medical students from the vehicle.
Three of the students were pronounced dead at the scene, while two others succumbed to their injuries on the way to Alappuzha Medical College Hospital.
Additionally, two other students were admitted to the same hospital, with one reported to be in critical condition.
Reports indicate that there were ten students in the car at the time of the accident.
P. S. M. Hussain, the Vice-Chairman of Alappuzha Municipal Council, mentioned that locals observed the car attempting to overtake another vehicle. When the driver applied the brakes, the car skidded and collided with the bus coming from the opposite direction.
The students were reportedly on their way to Kochi.
"We are awaiting the CCTV footage, as the accident occurred near a camera location," Hussain stated.
The bus driver noted that the car was traveling at a high speed and that despite his efforts to prevent the collision, it could not be avoided.
The Tavera car was left completely wrecked.
The accident caused significant disruption to traffic on the road. The police are still working to determine the exact cause of the accident.
The Police and the Motor Vehicles Department have launched an investigation into the incident.
