Thiruvananthapuram, Nov 13 (NationPress) Tensions within the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) have intensified as Kerala Education Minister V Sivankutty openly criticised the CPI concerning the state’s withdrawal from the Centre's PM SHRI school initiative.
The CPI, being the second-largest ally of the LDF government helmed by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, is at the center of this dispute.
Clearly frustrated by the decision, Sivankutty stated that the government had reached a "collective and well-considered position" after extensive discussions, emphasizing that it is inappropriate for anyone to "teach the CPI(M) how to uphold Left values".
During the cabinet meeting on Wednesday, Chief Minister Vijayan revealed that a letter of withdrawal had been sent to the Centre.
He explained that the CPI(M) had engaged in the PM SHRI arrangement solely to secure constitutionally guaranteed central funding while staunchly defending Kerala's secular and progressive educational framework.
"We have ensured that there will be no compromise on our secular ethos," Sivankutty asserted, adding that the decision to withdraw was made after thorough consultations and should not be depicted as a CPI triumph.
He indicated that this withdrawal might jeopardise access to ₹15,000 crore in SSK (Samagra Shiksha Kerala) funds.
"If those funds are withheld, the blame does not rest with me as the Education Minister," he insisted.
In response to Sivankutty's remarks, CPI State Secretary Binoy Viswam addressed the situation calmly, stating there was "no need for a flare-up".
"I am not sure why Sivankutty is so worked up," he commented, opting not to engage in a public argument.
"As the state secretary, I will refrain from further comments. What we need now is political maturity. I am not here to educate Sivankutty; if anyone needs advice, let the CPI(M) leadership provide it."
Viswam reaffirmed that "withdrawing from PM SHRI is a victory for Left ideology", clarifying that the PM SHRI and SSK programs are distinct, and that the BJP is "intentionally trying to merge the two".
"The SSK fund is a rightful entitlement for Kerala, and the LDF will take action if the Centre acts unfairly," he stated.
