Imphal, Feb 9 (NationPress) Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge asserted on Sunday that his party's no-confidence motion, escalating public pressure, and the Supreme Court investigation led to the discredited resignation of Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh.
Kharge, accompanied by Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, visited Manipur on January 14 last year to initiate the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, which commenced in Manipur. He remarked that Biren Singh's resignation is akin to “closing the stable door after the horse has bolted!”
In a post on X, he expressed, “It is painful to say that for 21 months, the BJP ignited a fire in Manipur and left the people, across communities, to fend for themselves. Their rank incompetence and utter disregard for Rajdharma resulted in at least 258 fatalities, over 5,600 arms, and 6.5 lakh rounds of ammunition being looted from police armouries, with more than 60,000 people displaced and thousands still stuck in relief camps.”
He emphasized that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has seemingly forgotten that Manipur is indeed a part of India.
“It is high time he rejigs his memory and locates Manipur on the map of India! Modi ji has not set foot in Manipur since his last election campaign in January 2022, though he has found time to visit several foreign nations in the meantime,” he added.
As the Chief Minister resigned belatedly, the Congress party hopes and urges PM Modi to visit Manipur and listen to the horror stories from its citizens.
“The Congress party’s no-confidence motion, increased public pressure, and the Supreme Court investigation resulted in the discredited CM’s resignation,” he stated.
The Congress President also expressed gratitude, stating, “This time it’s not a 2023-like resignation drama, and better sense prevailed.”
Meanwhile, Congress Lok Sabha Member from Inner Manipur, Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, while addressing the media, mentioned that the populace of Manipur deserves a responsible government capable of addressing the situation.
“The economy has been devastated. Numerous lives have been lost, and thousands remain in relief camps. We seek a responsible government. Coincidentally, tomorrow (Monday), we are expected to convene our Assembly sessions. I have heard that the Governor's secretariat has confirmed that tomorrow's session will not commence,” he remarked.
He noted that, thus far, there has been no formal notification concerning the imposition of President's rule in Manipur.
Following the outbreak of ethnic violence in Manipur, Chief Minister Biren Singh, following directives from Central BJP leaders, submitted his resignation to Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla a day before the crucial Assembly session.
However, the Governor cancelled the Budget session of the Manipur Assembly on Sunday night.
On Friday, Manipur state Congress chief Keisham Meghachandra Singh stated that his party, which holds five MLAs in the 60-member house, would initiate a no-confidence motion against the BJP government for its failure in addressing the ethnic violence in the state.
