Rajya Sabha Leader Kharge: Public Service is Eternal
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 18 (NationPress) Mallikarjun Kharge, the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, participated in a farewell ceremony on Wednesday, honoring the members who are set to retire from the Upper House. He stressed that dedication to public service transcends official roles.
As he approaches his own retirement from the Rajya Sabha in June, Kharge engaged in the proceedings, which began with fellow members extending their best wishes to those concluding their terms between April and July.
During his address, Kharge underscored the perpetual nature of parliamentary duties and the ongoing legacy of the House.
Following remarks from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he stated, "Many members will return to the House; nonetheless, some may not have the chance to return... The Rajya Sabha is a permanent and ongoing institution, as also indicated by the Prime Minister. Every six years, members are elected, and every two years, a third of the members retire. Today, we witness this cycle."
He emphasized that those involved in public life are motivated by a sense of responsibility, irrespective of their term lengths.
"Individuals in politics or public service are driven by their passion for serving the nation and do not tire or retire," Kharge remarked.
Reflecting on his own journey, he shared that his time in the House has been profoundly rewarding.
"This is my first tenure in this House, and soon it will come to a close. Yet, the experiences I have gained from my fellow members are invaluable. The discussions here are highly educational. Even after years in politics, I continue to learn a great deal here," he mentioned.
In a lighthearted moment, Kharge humorously referred to former Prime Minister H.D. Devegowda, quipping, "I have known him for many years, but I remain puzzled about what transpired. Love is with us, marriage is with Modi ji. This just happened recently, but I am unsure how," which drew laughter from members, including the Prime Minister.
Kharge also expressed his pleasure that NCP(SP) leader Sharad Pawar would be rejoining the House.
In a humorous exchange regarding the Republican Party of India chief and Union Minister Ramdas Athawale, he said, "He continually praises PM Modi through his poems, without fail. I wonder if he knows any other poetry apart from that directed at you (PM Modi)," again eliciting laughter among the members.
He took a moment to acknowledge the contributions of retiring members such as Digvijaya Singh, K.T.S. Tulsi, and Abhishek Manu Singhvi, commending their roles in enriching parliamentary discussions and activities.
