Belagavi (Karnataka), Jan 21 (NationPress) AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge and Congress MP from Wayanad, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, arrived at Sambra Airport in Belagavi on Tuesday to partake in the kickoff of the 'Jai Bapu, Jai Bhim, Jai Samvidhan' convention.
The Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, has canceled his Karnataka visit due to health issues.
Karnataka's Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Home Minister G. Parameshwara graciously received Kharge and Priyanka with bouquets.
In a media interaction, CM Siddaramaiah clarified Rahul Gandhi's absence, stating, “The Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, is not present due to ill health. Please don’t report that he is avoiding the convention for other reasons.”
“A Kannada news channel suggested that Rahul Gandhi has distanced himself from the event. What kind of message does that send? Rahul Gandhi was eager to visit, but illness prevented him from doing so,” he added.
While discussing initiatives to honor the centenary of Mahatma Gandhi as the AICC's Chairman, CM Siddaramaiah remarked, “The 'Jai Bapu, Jai Bhim, Jai Samvidhan' campaign will extend throughout the year. There is a growing disconnection from Mahatma Gandhi's principles, and this initiative aims to reinforce them.”
He further asserted that Mahatma Gandhi's ideologies are profoundly significant today.
“He championed unity, equality, the eradication of untouchability, women’s empowerment, and the safeguarding of women’s rights. The values of Mahatma Gandhi, Basavanna, and Kanakadasa are enshrined in the Constitution,” CM Siddaramaiah stated.
“There exists opposition to Mahatma Gandhi, the Constitution, and Babasaheb Ambedkar's ideals. It is the Congress’ duty to uphold these values. We represent the Congress and its principles, in contrast to the Manuwadis,” he remarked.
He also mentioned, “Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will be attending, along with AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge, working committee members, and other office bearers.”
The Congress government is unveiling a statue of Mahatma Gandhi at the premises of the Suvarna Vidhana Soudha in Belagavi and organizing a large convention at the CP Ed Grounds later in the day.
The Congress has extended invitations to opposition leaders for the statue's inauguration.
