A sacred town on the Godavari is getting a modern makeover — without losing its soul. Union Coal and Mines Minister G. Kishan Reddy on Wednesday, 29 July 2026, highlighted that Bhadrachalam in Bhadradri Kothagudem district, Telangana, is being transformed under the Centre's PRASHAD (Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual Heritage Augmentation Drive) Scheme, with a project worth ₹41.38 crore now 55% complete.

What ₹41.38 crore is building at Bhadrachalam

The project is not a single structure — it is an entire pilgrim ecosystem. A Pilgrim Amenities Complex at Bhadrachalam, a Vrata Mandapam for ritual observances, a Canteen Block, and a shed over Mithila Stadium are among the works underway. Downstream, the satellite site of Parnasala — associated with the Ramayana's forest exile — receives its own Pilgrim Amenities Complex, MS Structure Roofing, and Granite Flooring. Parking areas, external development works, fencing, and boat facilities round out the package.

The entire project is targeted for completion by end of 2026, with the remaining 45% of works to be commissioned in the months ahead.

Bhadrachalam's draw — and why the Centre is investing here

Bhadrachalam is one of South India's most revered Vaishnava shrines, home to the historic Sri Rama Temple on the banks of the Godavari river. It draws hundreds of thousands of pilgrims annually, particularly during Sri Rama Navami, when the temple's celestial wedding ceremony is a state event in Telangana. Infrastructure at the site has historically lagged behind the scale of devotee footfall — a gap the PRASHAD project directly targets.

The PRASHAD Scheme, launched in 2014-15 as a central sector initiative under the Ministry of Tourism, was designed precisely for this: pair heritage conservation with modern amenities at India's major pilgrimage destinations. Bhadrachalam joins a national list of sites — spanning multiple states — that have received PRASHAD funding for facilities upgrades and connectivity works.

Kishan Reddy's Telangana lens

As BJP's Telangana state president, Kishan Reddy has consistently spotlighted central-government investments flowing into the state — framing them as evidence of the Modi government's commitment to a region the party is working to consolidate politically. The Bhadrachalam post follows that pattern: a concrete number (₹41.38 crore), a clear completion milestone (end-2026), and an explicit link to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's heritage-preservation agenda.

The minister noted the project would 'significantly enhance pilgrim facilities, improve accessibility, preserve the region's spiritual heritage, and promote religious tourism in Telangana.'

When the cranes leave Bhadrachalam and the granite floors gleam, the real test will be whether the completed infrastructure can absorb the surging tide of pilgrims — and whether Parnasala, long overshadowed by the main temple, finally gets the footfall its Ramayana significance deserves.
